On December 31, a group of men, including Eddy Kariuki, Geoffrey Warutumo, Raphael Wachira, and James Mwangi, met at a popular hotel in Nyeri town. They had been hired by Stephen Wang'ondu, the late Nyeri tycoon, to carry out a gruesome murder.
According to the Director of Criminal Investigations, the men had admitted to taking part in the murder. A down payment of Sh. 100,000 was paid to the gang, which was used to construct a two-room house by Eddy and purchase household goods, including a sub woofer, by Raphael.
On January 1, this year, Daniel Mwangi Wang'ondu was found murdered. The motive behind his murder was puzzling, as nothing had been stolen from him or his house, not even his Volkswagen Golf car beside which he lay lifeless.
His father, Stephen Wang'ondu, is said to have started processing compensation claims from an insurance company a few days after the burial of his son. He began the compensation process on January 18, 2021, barely 12 days after his son's burial.
Investigations into the murder also raised questions about the death of Wang'ondu's other son, Emmanuel Thuita Wang'ondu, who drowned in a dam on his father's farm in 1995. A few days after Thuita's death, Wang'ondu lodged a compensation claim with an insurance company.
