On Sunday, thousands of athletes from across the country will gather in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, for the 13th edition of the Tuskys Great 10km Run Wareng. The event, which has grown significantly since its inception in 2006, will take place on a road course, marking a change from its previous cross-country format.
According to Tusky's Chief Executive Officer Daniel Githua, the decision to switch to a road race was made to increase visibility and attract more participants. 'By making it a road race, we saw it will be more visible and have more participants than before, the prizes will also be better than last year,' Githua said during the launch in Nairobi on Wednesday.
The event, which is expected to draw around 10,000 participants, will feature a 10-kilometre and five-kilometre race category, as well as a half marathon. The first finishers in both men's and women's categories will pocket Sh500,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive Sh300,000 and Sh100,000, respectively.
Organisers have also extended the award category to the first 100 finishers, who will receive various household items. Nation Media Group (NMG) is the official partner of the competition and will support the event through heavy promotion on its platform and coverage of the activities on NTV Crossover show.
Athletics Kenya (AK) President Jackson Tuwei has urged the athletes to ensure they 'run clean' during the competition.
