Published on November 13, 2019, Harambee Stars are facing a crisis in Egypt as they are on the verge of being evicted from their hotel in Alexandria due to unpaid bills.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO, Barry Otieno, confirmed the development, which could have serious implications for the team's chances of picking a result against Egypt in the opening match of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to Otieno, Ministry officials had promised to settle the payment since Friday, but this has not happened. The hotel has since informed the team that they will be evicted, and a few members of the technical team will be detained until payment is done.
The team left for Egypt on Monday, and the government is responsible for paying all the bills, including full board accommodation and the players' allowances. However, the players have yet to receive their allowances.
Furthermore, Harambee Starlets players have not received their dues for competing in the 2020 Olympic qualifiers against Malawi, Ghana, and Zambia.
The development comes amid a standoff between Sports Principal Secretary, Kirimi Kaberia, and FKF president Nick Mwendwa. Mwendwa has accused Kaberia of consistently denying the team funds, but Kaberia has maintained that he will not release any more funds unless FKF fully accounts for the Sh244 million it received to prepare Stars for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
