Time-Wasting Habits that Steal Your Productivity

Published on November 13, 2019, a study revealed that on average, people spend 44% of their day web surfing, 23.4% socializing with coworkers, 3.9% spacing out, and 1.3% applying for other jobs.

These statistics indicate that people often get into routines where they mindlessly waste their time. However, it's essential to recognize that you're not a procrastinator; you have a habit of procrastinating. This means you can break the habit and become more productive.

One of the most counterintuitive time wasters is deciding what to do first. Taking time at the start of each day to prioritize your to-do list may seem like a productivity enhancer, but it can be a time and energy-sapping exercise. Instead, focus on one thing you can make progress on the next morning before leaving work and do that first.

Another habit that ruins your day and time management is over-scheduling with no buffer time. This can lead to a domino effect, causing you to become late for everything else. To avoid this, schedule buffer time before and after each meeting or activity, allowing 30 minutes for unforeseen circumstances.

Slow-motion mornings can also hinder your productivity. Instead of stalling and getting working, try delaying your morning coffee chat or putting your phone out of reach. You can also try batching your to-do activities or listening to ambient noise to help you focus.

Additionally, hitting the snooze button can be detrimental to your productivity. Sleeping in short increments is not beneficial, and it's better to set your alarm an hour later and get more rest. It's also essential to recognize the opportunity cost of sleeping in and make the most of your time.

Finally, Monday meetings can be a significant productivity killer. Instead of having meetings on Mondays, try hosting them at the end of the business day on Friday. This will allow you to start the week with a fresh perspective and tackle your challenges with renewed motivation.
