Published on November 13, 2019, the East Africa Community Customs Management Act 2004 offers several benefits to returning Kenyans.

One of the most significant advantages is the exemption from paying taxes on personal effects, as stated in Part B, paragraph 5 of the 5th Schedule.

Returning residents are allowed to bring one motor vehicle duty-free, excluding buses and mini buses, subject to specific conditions.

To qualify, the importer must be changing residence and not just visiting temporarily. The individual must be over 18 years old and have personally owned and used the motor vehicle outside Kenya for at least 12 months prior to importing it.

The motor vehicle must not be older than 8 years and must meet the age limit set by the government.

Additionally, the vehicle must be inspected by JEVIC and not be a Left Hand Drive.

Returning Kenyans are also exempted from paying taxes on their personal effects, which include wearing apparel and personal and household effects used in their former place of residence.
