President Uhuru Kenyatta Orders Civil Servants to Wear Locally Made Clothes on Fridays ¶
On Heroes Day, 20th October 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta made a significant announcement that has left many Kenyans talking. In his speech, he ordered all civil servants to wear nationally designed clothing on Fridays and during holidays.
The President's move is aimed at boosting the country's textile industry, which is part of the Big 4 Agenda. He set an example by wearing clothes made in Kenya during the Heroes Day celebrations in Mombasa, and cabinet members and other deputies followed suit.
The order was communicated through a circular signed by the country's legal advisor, which stated, 'In fulfilment of the Big 4 agenda's goals, specifically the expansion of manufacturing and production of goods, and the creation of local employment, I order all civil servants to dress decently and casually on Fridays using clothes sewn and produced in Kenya.'
However, there is confusion over whether 'nationally designed clothing' is the same as a 'national dress.' A national dress reflects a country's culture and heritage, and people intend to pass it down from one generation to the next.
On the other hand, traditional clothes represent a country's culture and identity. It is essential to hold on to them to preserve traditions. If we do not promote our customs, they may become extinct.
Kenya's youth who wear traditional clothes, despite western pressure, have fewer behavioral and emotional problems. This is because they are in touch with their ancestral culture, religion, and traditions, and thus not confused about their identity or who they are.
It is essential to strike a balance between traditional and modern clothes. We can follow new trends while promoting our culture and being attached to our roots.
President Uhuru Kenyatta's order is a step in the right direction to boost the country's textile industry and promote local employment. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving our culture and traditions.
