On July 2, 2018, Kisumu County Governor Anyang' Nyong'o announced plans to debate a proposal to elevate Kisumu to city status, a move aimed at transforming the county into an economic hub for the East Africa Community.

As part of his efforts to improve service delivery, Nyong'o's administration has made significant strides in health, business, and infrastructure development. In the last financial year, the county government spent Sh9.5 million to purchase dairy cows for farmers, leveraging the Sh123 million dairy multiplication centre funded by the United States Agency for International Development.

Through this initiative, the county government strengthened dairy co-operative societies by providing them with milk coolers. Additionally, Nyong'o's administration has invested Sh130 million in upgrading Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, including the construction of a 31-bed ward and renovation of the emergency and trauma centre.

These developments come at a time when traders are struggling to rebuild their investments after their stalls were demolished to pave way for the expansion of the port.
