On November 5, 2019, award-winning photographer Collins Kweyu was attacked by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his supporters at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission offices.
According to eyewitnesses, Sonko slapped Kweyu on the head as he made his way to the EACC gate, where he had been summoned.
Collins Kweyu, who was on official duty, was assaulted by multiple people, including a man wearing a light blue coat believed to be Sonko's security detail.
As the incident unfolded, police were busy teargassing Sonko's supporters who had accompanied the governor to the EACC offices.
Speaking to NTV, Kweyu recounted the ordeal, saying, 'I found myself being beaten by several people and I could not know who exactly was beating me and in actual sense I had done no crime.'
Many have condemned the assault on the photographer, with journalists taking to social media to call for respect for journalists.
Citizen TV's Francis Gachuri wrote, 'This is extremely sad and unfortunate. Collins Kweyu is a fantastic photographer and journalist. He deserves respect. Attacking him while on duty is WRONG and UNACCEPTABLE.'
