On November 5, 2019, Human Rights activist Boniface Mwangi recorded a video at McDonald Mariga's backyard in Land Mawe, Starehe Constituency, where he criticized Mariga's track record in Kibra.

Mwangi, who pitched for his Ukweli Party's candidate Editar Ochieng, accused Mariga of not giving back to the community that nurtured him, despite achieving footballing success.

He pointed out the poor state of the football field where Mariga honed his skills, claiming it was a reflection of Mariga's lack of contribution to the community.

“Hapa ni Land Mawe grounds hapa ndio Mariga alijulia kucheza ball. Mariga ni boy wa Muthurwa amelelewa Muthurwa, hii ni stadium ya mawe. Mariga alienda Sweden akaenda Inter Milan akacheza ball hajasaidia wasee wa mtaa. Mariga maisha yote hajawai kupiga kura,” charges Mwangi.

He also accused Mariga of being a beneficiary of the community's resources, saying that voting for him would be foolish.

The Kibra by-election was held on Thursday, with ODM party candidate Imran Okoth facing off against Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga.
