Kenya is gearing up to send a large contingent of athletes to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with at least 80 sportsmen expected to represent the country.
According to Chef de Mission Waithaka Kioni, 45 athletes have already qualified for the games, including two swimmers, 28 track and field athletes, and the national rugby women's team, the Lionesses.
Other teams awaiting qualification include the national women's football team, the national rugby sevens team, the national women's volleyball team, the boxing team, and additional track and field athletes.
With only 10 months remaining until the summer games, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) is racing against time to prepare the respective teams for the global event.
“Despite the various challenges we are facing, we are focused on Tokyo 2020. We are now engaging with the respective federations in order to finalize their qualification process with our main objective being to get the best athletes,” said Kioni.
The National Olympic Committee of Kenya has outlined that athletes selected to represent the country will be subjected to rigorous anti-doping tests prior to the competition.
The Tokyo Games are scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
