On November 4, 2019, Chief Justice David Maraga announced that he would no longer allow state officers to disrespect the office of the Chief Justice.

During a press conference, CJ Maraga expressed his frustration with the treatment he received during the recent Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mombasa, where he was not acknowledged by the presiding master of ceremony and was forced to use a side entry to the dias.

“The CJ has no Mercedes. When we applied we were told to keep to 2500cc…Yet the 2 speakers of the NA have Mercedes 500…The CJ is not accorded the respect of his office. I have decided that until that happens, I will choose which State functions to attend” – CJ David Maraga.

He stated that his presence was not acknowledged by the presiding master of ceremony and he was further forced to use a side entry to the dias as opposed to the official entry that was designated for the dignitaries.

“I am not serving at the pleasure of any CS or PS…We do not go out to look for cases, cases come to us…I will not go to look for public funds from anybody. Those are public funds” – CJ David Maraga.
