On November 3, 2019, Kenyan athlete Joyciline Jepkosgei made history by winning the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon in a stunning upset.

Competing in her debut at the full distance, Jepkosgei outpaced four-time champion Mary Keitany to claim the top spot.

According to the official Twitter account of the New York City Marathon, Jepkosgei broke away from Keitany in the 23rd mile, staging an epic run that saw her clock an astonishing 2:22:38, just seven seconds short of the course record.

Keitany secured a second-place finish in 2:23:32, while Ethiopia's Ruti Aga completed the podium in 2:25:51.

Despite setting a fast early pace, American athlete Desiree Linden could only manage a sixth-place finish after posting 2:26:46.

Jepkosgei's thrilling victory earned her KSh 10 million plus a bonus of KSh 4.5 million for finishing faster than 2:23.
