Kenya Sevens forward Andrew Amonde has called on the government to provide support to the team ahead of the Africa Sevens tournament in Johannesburg, South Africa, next weekend.
Published on November 2, 2019, the team is set to compete in the two-day continental showpiece, which will also serve as the 2020 Olympic qualifiers.
Amonde, who will captain Shujaa at the tournament, expressed the team's financial difficulties due to lack of stable sponsorship, saying it is 'very difficult to perform without getting the necessary support.'
"This is something that is very important to us before we start the World Sevens Series," Amonde added, echoing sentiments by KRU Vice Chairman Thomas Opiyo.
The team, which has been boosted by the return of Billy Odhiambo, will face Ivory Coast in their first match. Odhiambo makes a comeback to the Shujaa set up after a lengthy spell out which saw him miss the entire 2018-19 World Sevens Series.
However, the team will have to do without all-time leading try scorer Collins Injera, who has not been passed fit after sustaining a shoulder injury.
