On Thursday, Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) unanimously approved a motion to regulate private hospital parking, presented by Nominated MCA Ann Thumbi.
The motion, introduced in June, seeks to bar private hospitals from charging parking fees, citing a marked increase in the number of private hospitals with well-developed parking slots.
Ms. Thumbi noted that Article 186 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya provides powers to the County Government to govern parking, and that the lack of regulations has resulted in exorbitant parking fees in some private hospitals.
While acknowledging that private hospitals may impose parking fees to deter mischievous motorists, the motion urges the County Executive to develop a policy to regulate parking charges to avert exploitation by owners of premises.
According to sources in the County Assembly, the executive is likely to approve the policy, which may soon see private hospitals in the City stopped from collecting parking fees.
