On October 30, 2019, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) was rocked by a major scandal when four examination officers at Hezta Group of schools in Nyandarua County were arrested for leaking KCPE examination papers.

The officers, including the centre manager, two invigilators, and a supervisor, were apprehended after some answers written on toilet papers were recovered from teachers hiding in a house within the school compound.

According to allegations, the invigilators were taking pictures of the examination papers and sending them electronically to the teachers, who would then transmit the answers back to the officers to pass on to the pupils.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha had earlier warned of dire consequences for those found culpable of exam malpractice, highlighting Migori, Kisii, and Homabay counties as hotspots for exam irregularities and malpractices.

Magoha also cautioned parents against spearheading the vice, emphasizing the government's keen eye on several schools in those counties.
