This archive report was first published on 28 October 2019.

On Monday, as KCPE exam rehearsals kicked off, a 14-year-old boy from Kasuna Primary School in Nyando was still recuperating at Ahero Sub-County Hospital.

According to reports, the teenager's parents, Rose Akoth and Ojoro Omuya, had accused him of stealing a mobile phone and, in a horrific act, wrapped his hands with newspapers, doused them with paraffin, and set them on fire.

As the boy's parents remain remanded at Ahero Police Station, the teenager is responding well to treatment for the burn wounds and is hoping to write his exams on Tuesday.

The court in Nyando had allowed the parents to be detained pending conclusion of investigations, and they are scheduled to take plea at the same court as their son sits his KCPE exams in hospital.

Well wishers who visited the teenager at the hospital expressed hope that he would recover fully and be able to sit for his exams.
