On October 24, 2019, Safaricom announced the appointment of Peter Ndegwa as its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Bob Collymore who passed away in July 2020.

Ndegwa's appointment takes effect on April 1, 2020, as stated by Safaricom Chairman Nicholas Ng'ang'a in a press statement.

With over 25 years of experience in the Financial Services and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods sectors in Africa and Europe, Ndegwa joins Safaricom from Diageo PLC, a British multinational alcoholic beverages company, where he served as the Managing Director of Diageo Continental Europe.

He has overseen operations in 50 countries across Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and North Africa region.

Before joining Diageo, Ndegwa served as CEO of Guinness Nigeria PLC and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC for seven years.

As Safaricom's third CEO, Ndegwa succeeds Bob Collymore and Michael Joseph, who was the company's first CEO.

Following Collymore's demise, Michael Joseph was appointed as the interim CEO to facilitate a swift succession plan.
