On 23rd October 2019, the Labour Court suspended the appointment of former Othaya MP Mary Wambui as chairperson of the National Employment Authority (NEA) pending the hearing and determination of a case challenging her ascension to the top board seat at the jobs authority.
The court's decision was made following the filing of a petition by the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association, which argued that Wambui was grossly unsuitable to hold the office due to her limited educational background.
According to the petition, Wambui had personally admitted to having a limited educational background, which made her unqualified and unsuitable to conduct the affairs of the chairperson of National Employment Authority.
The petition was filed after Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja directed the association to challenge President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to appoint Wambui, citing that she was not a Human Resource Management (HRM) professional and that many other Kenyans deserved to be appointed ahead of her.
Senator Sakaja had instructed his lawyers and those of the Young Parliamentarians Association to file a petition to quash Wambui's appointment, stating that there were many Kenyans who had distinguished themselves in HRM both locally and internationally.
