On October 22, 2019, Moi University's main campus in Kesses, Eldoret was indefinitely closed due to student unrest.

Two weeks later, the university announced that some students would be allowed to return, but with certain conditions.

According to a circular signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kimengi, only Engineering students in their first, fourth, and fifth year would be resuming classes.

Prof. Kimengi stated that the resumption of academic programmes for second and third-year students would be announced at a later date.

Students were required to clear their semester fees and surcharges before resuming classes.

The indefinite closure was a result of student protests, which led to the varsity senate shutting down the institution.

Some university officials were reportedly injured during the melee.

The students' grievances included mismanagement of university funds, insecurity, and a hike in examination fees.
