Kenyan marathoner Patrick Cheruiyot, a promising athlete who had emerged fifth in the 2018 Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon, has died at a hospital in Nairobi.
According to Volare Sports, Cheruiyot's sports agency, he dropped out of the Graz Marathon in Austria on October 12 after complaining of a headache at the 3-kilometer point. He was acting as the pacemaker for the race's eventual winner, Mathew Kemboi.
Cheruiyot was treated for malaria upon his return to Kenya but showed no improvement. A CT scan on October 16 revealed a brain hemorrhage, and he passed away on October 18.
"He had to drop out of the race at 3km point. He complained of headache and the medical aid services helped and examined him. Nothing serious was found and he was ready to travel home," Volare Sports said in a statement.
Cheruiyot leaves behind a widow and two children. He was just 32 years old.
