On October 20, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the revamped Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa, marking a significant milestone in the city's tourism development.

The park, which was redeveloped at a cost of Sh460 million, has been transformed into an integrated urban tourist attraction site, offering a range of amenities and activities for visitors.

Located on a 26-acre site overlooking the Kilindini Channel, the park features a range of facilities, including a landscaped waterfront, an amphitheatre, the Kilindini Cultural Centre, ablution blocks, and two main gates.

Visitors to the park can enjoy cultural exhibitions, shopping, dining at open-air fresco restaurants and cafes, or simply relax at the expansive site.

The project, which was undertaken by local company Suhufi Agencies, is designed to support a 24-hour economy and includes a new jetty for water taxis.

President Kenyatta had commissioned the construction of the park in January, with the aim of restoring Mombasa's status as a top tourist destination in the region.

The redevelopment was completed in time for the Mashujaa Day fete, which was held in Mombasa County as part of the counties' rotational hosting of national events.

The official opening was marked by a range of entertainment activities, including fireworks displays, traditional dances, and acrobatic shows.

Deputy President William Ruto, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho were among those present at the event.
