Machakos Assistant Commissioner Arrested Over Lost Keys to KCPE Exam Container ¶
Elizabeth Karitu, a Machakos Assistant Commissioner, was arrested on October 20, 2019, after losing keys to a container holding KCPE exam papers in Athi River, Kenya.
According to Kamishna wa Kaunti ya Machakos Esther Maina, Karitu claimed that thieves had broken into her car in Nairobi and stolen a bag containing the keys to the container.
However, Maina assured that the container and its contents were safe and that measures were being taken to ensure the exam papers were not compromised.
“Usalama umeimarishwa ambako kontena hiyo ipo na juhudi za kubadilisha kufuli,” Maina said.
Just a week earlier, on October 13, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i had warned county commissioners that they would be held accountable if the security of the exam papers was compromised.
“Makamishna wa kaunti watachukuliwa sheria endapo usalama wa makasha hayo yatatatizwa,” Matiang'i said.
The KCPE exams were scheduled to take place from October 29 to October 31, 2019, while the KCSE exams were set to begin on November 4, 2019.
