On October 10, 13 days after their vehicle plunged into the ocean, the bodies of Mariam Kighenda, 35, and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, four, were finally retrieved.

Yesterday, hundreds of mourners gathered at Kima Technical Training Institute, Kilome, Makueni County, to pay their last respects to the two victims of the Likoni Ferry tragedy.

Former Vice President and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was among those who attended the funeral, and he used the opportunity to call for justice for the victims.

“This is criminal negligence. I want Senator Mutula Kilonzo to take up this case as a pro bono. We want to see people arrested, and taken to court tomorrow,” Kalonzo said.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana also spoke out, asking for independent investigators from the family side to be included in the investigations.

Other leaders who attended the ceremony called for critical reforms at the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the two were laid to rest in Mung'ala village, Ngaamba, their family and friends were still reeling from the shock of their loss.
