Residents of Njukini in Kirinyaga county have been living in fear due to constant attacks by monkeys.
According to residents, the primates not only leave behind a trail of destruction on their farms but also harass women and children whenever they invade homes.
On Saturday, October 19, 2019, NTV reported that the notorious animals had caused so much fear among the female residents who were the worst hit.
As a result, farmers have been forced to forego their duties and accompany children to schools every morning, while others prefer staying guard both day and night to protect their farms and families against the animals who also grab their food.
One resident lamented, "They chase women and even slap them. The monkeys can be notorious at times and break into houses and pick whatever they can lay their hands on including food and chickens."
Similar incidents were reported in 2018 in the nearby Murang'a county, where Governor Mwangi wa Iria initiated a programme to hunt and trap thousands of monkeys.
At least, over 100 monkeys were captured using traps in a programme said to cost millions of shillings and meant to trap as many primates as possible.
