On October 17, 2019, the High Court in Nairobi issued orders stopping the Senate and its agents from discussing the impeachment of Governor Granton Samboja of Taita Taveta pending the hearing and determination of a case set for October 28, 2019.
The move comes after the Senate formed a special committee to investigate allegations by Taita Taveta Members of County Assembly (MCAs) that led to Samboja's ouster last week.
The MCAs accuse the governor of gross misconduct, misappropriation of funds, and failure to assent to the 2019/2020 budget, which they say has led to underdevelopment in the county.
Justice James Makau issued the conservatory order barring the speaker of the county from submitting to the Senate the resolution recommending the impeachment of the governor.
The assembly voted to impeach the governor and recommended his removal from office, citing gross violation of the law.
