Kenya's affordable housing dream is taking shape, with the first units of the Park Road project ready for occupation. The project, which aims to provide housing for deserving and qualified Kenyans, has 228 units available.

Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary James Macharia announced the project's readiness at the Kenya Homes Expo, which was held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre over the weekend.

Speaking at the expo, which was attended by over 130 exhibitors, Macharia said the houses would be issued to qualified Kenyans before the end of the year. He also announced plans to upgrade and improve informal settlements, including Kibera, Marigu-ini, and Kiambiu.

"We are encouraging Kenyans of all walks to register themselves at Boma Yangu portal and make voluntary contributions for this and upcoming projects," Macharia said.

He also outlined the purchase model for the affordable housing project, which will include outright sales, tenant purchase, subsidised mortgage, sale to members of co-operatives, and employer-employee facilitated housing.

"We need to have investors coming up with local products that can also compete internationally," Ojijo said, adding that it was good to see local manufacturers of granite and good quality furniture being showcased at the expo.
