On October 17, 2019, the Assets Recovery Agency dealt a significant blow to the Ngirita family in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal, declaring their assets as proceeds of crime.
The family, consisting of Phyllis Ngirita, Lucy Wambui, and Jeremiah Gichina, has been accused of pocketing NYS funds without providing proof of the properties they acquired and the cash they have that is subject to forfeiture to the government.
According to the Assets Recovery Agency, the family failed to demonstrate or table any evidence to support claims that they secured contracts with NYS, supplied goods, or paid any taxes to the government on income made.
The investigator in the NYS scandal case, Fredrick Musyoki, stated that the Ngirita family fraudulently obtained the funds since there was no evidence of them supplying the goods to NYS, adding that the respondent failed to produce tangible evidence purporting legitimate agricultural activities or legitimate business of supply of goods.
Musyoka further stated that Ms. Phyllis Ngirita claims to have supplied watermelons, cabbages, English potatoes, onions, and green grams costing Ksh5.8 million in 2014, but a Ksh32, 874,670 difference has not been clarified.
