On October 16, 2019, Kenyatta University leaders Joshua Ayika Otieno, Vincent Huondo Mare, and Duncan Onjyago Ogila faced charges in court for allegedly planning a strike.
According to a detective's sworn affidavit, the three students - Ayika, a third-year law student, Mare, a fourth-year hospitality management student, and Ogila, a third-year education student - had been inciting fellow students to go on strike.
The detective alleged that Ayika had held a press conference at the university gate, inciting students to riot and burn the institution.
The court was told that if the three students were released, they might lead to further unrest in the institution.
The detective requested the court to consider the large number of students who were unable to attend classes due to the actions of a few individuals.
The court directed that the ruling on the students' release and bond terms would be delivered on October 18, 2019.
