Shopping for Sex Toys: What You Need to Know

Shopping for sex toys can be a lot like online dating: awkward, overwhelming, and a challenge that calls for separating the high-quality options from the duds. With so many options available, it's easy to get lost in the sea of choices. But with the right knowledge, you can find the perfect vibrator for your needs.

According to Kathryn Catney, who represents the Swedish sex toy brand LELO, a sex toy should be considered and thought out, just like any other luxury product. "When you invest in a sex toy, you're making an investment in your personal pleasure," she says.

Before you buy, think about what you really want out of your sex toy. Do you want a vibrator that can be used internally or externally? Do you prefer a specific type of material, such as silicone or hard plastic? And how much are you willing to spend? With proper care, vibrators can last a long time, so taking the time to figure out your wants and needs will go a long way.

Consider the Shape and Sensations You Crave

When it comes to vibrators, there are four basic types: wand-like, G-spot focused, dual-action, and bullet vibrators. Each type has its own unique features and benefits, so it's essential to consider what you're looking for in a vibrator. For example, if you like the spread-out sensations on your vulva, a wand-like vibrator like the Jimmyjane Form 2 ($149) may be the perfect choice.

On the other hand, if you prefer more intense and localized sensations, a G-spot focused vibrator like the Gigi 2 ($139) may be more up your alley. And if you're looking for a vibrator that can be used both internally and externally, a dual-action vibrator like the Minna Ola ($149) may be the way to go.

Check the Materials

Just like you wouldn't buy an expensive piece of clothing without first checking the label, it's essential to look at what a sex toy is made of before buying it. According to Claire Cavanah, co-founder of Babeland, silicone is the best material for sex toys. "Silicone transmits vibration well and it's non-porous and easy to clean with soap and water, making it healthy and safe for the body," she says.

Hard plastic is also a good option, but avoid jelly rubber, which contains phthalates, a chemical that's banned for use in children's products but unregulated in bedroom toys.

Make Sure You Like the Look

No matter how powerful the vibrator is, it would be a huge mistake to buy something you think looks scary, garish, or aesthetically unappealing. According to Cavanah, the aesthetics of a vibrator are almost as important as what it does. "Pick the one that tickles that sexy part of your imagination," she says. "Desire and aesthetic are deeply personal and entwined, so pick the vibrator (or vibrators) that speak to you."
