Trail Runner Mirna Valerio On The Dangers Of Running As A Woman ¶
Published on October 16, 2019
As a woman who regularly runs and hikes, I've encountered numerous safety concerns that make me feel uneasy. However, I refuse to let fear dictate my outdoor activities. In fact, I believe that venturing outdoors is essential for my physical and mental well-being.
I've been known to explore trails in various states, including Wyoming, Colorado, New Jersey, and Vermont. While I often run alone, I take basic precautions such as telling my son or a friend about my planned route and estimated time of arrival. I also never wear earbuds, which I believe is a crucial safety measure.
However, one of my best lines of defense is my intuition. I've learned to trust my instincts and act on them when I feel uneasy. This was the case during a recent run in the North Georgia Mountains, where I encountered a man who warned me about a bear on the trail. Despite my initial hesitation, I chose to continue running with him, which ultimately proved to be a mistake.
Looking back, I realize that I should have listened to my intuition and turned back. However, I've since learned to trust my instincts and take necessary precautions to ensure my safety. I believe that other women can do the same by trusting their guts and getting outside.
As a woman, I've come to realize that the biggest threat to my safety is not the animals I might encounter, but rather the two-legged beings among us. However, I refuse to let fear dictate my outdoor activities. Instead, I choose to take precautions and trust my intuition to ensure my safety.
Ultimately, I hope that other women will take precautions for their own safety, trust their guts, and get outside too. By doing so, we can empower ourselves and our bodies, and live a more fulfilling life.
