On November 5, 2021, a significant change took place in Nairobi's cityscape as Mbagathi Way was officially renamed Raila Odinga Way. The decision was made by city officials, following a motion brought before the Nairobi County Assembly by Minority Whip Peter Imwatok.
Imwatok's motion highlighted the fact that the planning and construction of the road took place during Odinga's tenure as Public Works Minister in former President Mwai Kibaki's first term. The motion also acknowledged Odinga's contributions to infrastructure development and his fight for the expansion of democratic space in Kenya, including his 10-year detention.
As Imwatok noted, 'We should appreciate deserving leaders while they are still alive [rather than] when they die.' He also expressed his pain at seeing people who did not positively impact society being appreciated more than those who sacrificed for the country's good, including giving their lives.
The renaming of the road is seen as a significant move, especially given Odinga's expected fifth stab at the presidency in the coming months. His campaign, 'Azimio La Umoja,' has been touring the country, advocating for national unity and a social welfare state among other initiatives. Unlike in past elections, Odinga now enjoys the backing of traditional foes, including President Uhuru Kenyatta and members of the Mt. Kenya elite.
