On September 29, 2019, a devastating ferry accident occurred in Likoni, Kenya, claiming the lives of Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda. The incident made headlines 13 days later when their bodies were discovered in the back seat of their car, still in a tight embrace.

As reported, the family has received compensation from National Bank, totaling Ksh200,000. The amount was split equally between Mariam's husband, John Wambua, and her father, Peter Mwaghogho, with each receiving Ksh100,000.

Speaking about the loss, John Wambua expressed his grief, stating that the tragedy was not only a personal loss but also a community loss, particularly for Mariam's classmates at M.M Shah Academy in Mombasa.

"Teachers, parents, and her classmates are heartbroken," Wambua said. "It is a big loss to me and the whole family. I loved my wife, and she loved me too."

Wambua also shared fond memories of his late wife, describing her as a hardworking individual who managed their farm in Msambweni.

"She was hardworking. She used to manage our farm in Msambweni," he said, fighting back tears.
