On October 14, 2019, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced the nominees for the Male Athlete of the Year award, with Kenyan duo Eliud Kipchoge and Timothy Cheruiyot among the 11 contenders.
World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge is a strong favourite to retain the award, having broken the two-hour marathon barrier with a time of 1:59:40 in Vienna, Austria, on October 12, 2019. He also won the London Marathon in April with a course record time of 2:02:37.
Timothy Cheruiyot, the World 1500m champion, led from start to finish to claim gold at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, and also won the 1500m Diamond League title, in addition to winning 10 of his 11 outdoor races across all distances.
The Kenyan pair will face stiff competition from US trio Donavan Brazier, Christian Coleman, and Noah Lyles, who have all had impressive seasons.

A three-way voting process will determine the finalists, with the IAAF Council and the IAAF Family casting their votes by email, and fans voting online via the IAAF's social media platforms.
