On May 3, 2021, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi emphasized the importance of fair compensation for journalists in maintaining their integrity.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day, Muturi called on media owners to prioritize paying their reporters and correspondents well, stating that this would help prevent them from becoming captives of government and news sources.

“Today is my day to ask media owners to pay our reporters and correspondents well. Pay them well first and then demand integrity, otherwise we risk making them captives of Government and news sources,” he said.

With the theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day being ‘Information as a Public good’, Muturi highlighted the significance of a free and independent media in a vibrant democracy and national development.

He emphasized that a cohesive, united, and prosperous country relies on journalists, editors, and media owners understanding the importance of their role.

Broadcasting PS Esther Koimett also spoke at the event, praising the media's role in steering the country's political, economic, and social development.

She noted that the ICT Ministry is working with the Media Council and other stakeholders to review the regulatory and policy environment to reflect the industry's needs.

The Government is also considering establishing a media fund to ensure sustainability in the industry, which is essential for a free and independent media serving the public interest.
