Published on October 11, 2019, the Meru Central Half Marathon was set to take place on Sunday at Kariene primary school Central Imenti. However, the event has been cancelled due to a lack of funds.

The organizing committee chairman Julius Kimathi explained that they were unable to raise enough funds for the event, which included awards and allowances for officials.

"It is unfortunate that the event will not take place this weekend. We had good plans but we could not raise enough money towards the occasion. County government was our main sponsors but they are yet to communicate," said Kimathi.

Meru Sports CeC Koome Miriti denied the County government's involvement in the cancellation, stating that they only provided minimal support like other sponsors.

"The marathon has in the past been privately sponsored. It was not our race, we only chipped in few coins together with other sponsors," said the CeC.

Shelmith Muriuki, the women's winner of the fifth edition of the Half Marathon, expressed frustration over the cancellation, citing the postponement of the event as a reason for her disappointment.
