Kenya is bracing for intense rain and potential flash floods and storm surges over the next four days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

Published on October 11, 2019, the weatherman warned of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds from Thursday, October 10 to Monday, October 14.

Residents in Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Uasin Gishu counties are at risk of flash floods, while those in Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homabay, and Busia counties in the Nyanza region have also been cautioned.

Eastern, Central, and Coastal areas are also expected to experience mudslides.

The Met Department advised residents to avoid driving or walking through moving water or open fields, and to steer clear of trees and grilled windows during the heavy rainfall.

“Flood waters may suddenly appear even in places where it has not rained heavily and can be deeper and faster than they look. The heavy rains and moderate to strong winds may result in strong surges along the Coast hence the marine industry should be on high alert,” the Met Department said.

“Do not take shelter under trees or stand near grilled windows as these are places or objects that attract lightning strikes,” the Met Department added.
