Published on October 10, 2019, a top opposition leader in Rwanda, Victoire Ingabire, is being questioned by security officials about a rebel attack that killed 14 civilians in the northern part of the country last week.

Ingabire, the leader of FDU-Inkingi, an opposition party not yet registered in Rwanda, was questioned on Tuesday and Wednesday and will continue to be questioned on Friday.

She denied that she had any connection to the attacks in Musanze district, a tourist area famous for its mountain gorillas.

Ingabire stated, "I am on a political battle, not of bullets," during an interview with the BBC on Tuesday.

The captured attackers reportedly told authorities that they were members of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebel group, which carries out cross-border attacks from their base in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ingabire is a strong critic of President Kagame and has a history of fighting for democratic change in Rwanda. She served eight years of a 15-year prison sentence on charges of threatening national security and denial of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. She was released last year after a presidential pardon.
