On September 4, 2017, Esther Chepkoech Maina, a police officer attached to Kasarani station, was convinced by a relative to invest in an online business with a dubious city businesswoman, Cyrose Mbithe Mathendu.

Mathendu promised Maina that the online business would generate significant profits with minimal effort, but what Maina got was an email account and nothing else.

Mathendu was later charged with obtaining money by false pretense at the Makadara law courts, with the prosecution alleging that she obtained Sh200,000 from Maina on September 4, 2017, claiming she could start a profitable online business for her.

Mathendu denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Steve Jalango and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.
