On October 9, 2019, a brazen robbery shook Eastleigh, with thieves making off with Sh6 million from Mohammed Hassan Mohammed and Abdulahi Hussein Yusuf at Barwqo Lodge.
Four police officers were caught on CCTV footage stealing the money, but one of them, Mwaniki, escaped with at least Ksh2.5 million and handed it over to a female officer, Caro, at Kayole Police Station.
Caro and the canteen operator, Petronila Njeri, then conspired to hide part of the loot, handing it over to a police commissioner, Moses Lubasia, at Ruai. Lubasia returned the pistol to the armory, sparking allegations he was trying to conceal evidence.
Three officers, Wilson Cheruiyot, Daniel Kipkorir, and Alex Kandie, were arrested along with a Cameroonian, Jean Baptist Esome, who was found with USD 35,200 (Ksh3.5 million) and three pistols.
Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti vowed to investigate all parties involved, including the victims and the police commissioner, saying 'a thief is a thief, irrespective of their rank.'
