On October 4, 2019, the university management suspended 19 students indefinitely, citing their alleged involvement in the unrest that led to the closure of the institution last month.
The students, including the Students' Governing Council Chairman Vincent Lumala, Secretary General Gerald Maina, and Treasurer Amon Kiptarus, were accused of masterminding the unrest.
The university administration had locked out students who had not cleared their fees from sitting end-of-semester examinations, prompting the strike.
According to a memo signed by Acting Registrar Academic Affairs Prof Thomas Sakwa, the suspended students were to report back to the university on October 14, 2019, and pay a fine of 950 shillings for the destruction of property during the strike.
However, a student leader who sought anonymity accused the university authorities of being unfair and sidelining the students' representatives in the decision-making process.
The acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Asenath Sigot, declined to comment on the matter.
