On October 9, 2019, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) kicked off a nationwide campaign to promote peaceful co-existence among communities, focusing on women and youth.
The campaign was launched in Garissa town, where NCIC Secretary Hassan Mohamed emphasized the importance of addressing conflicts before they escalate.
According to Hassan, many communities have traditionally relied on elders to resolve conflicts, leaving women and youth to bear the brunt of the consequences.
However, Hassan noted that women often play a leading role in campaign mobilization, using songs and dance to attract crowds, while the youth are often used to cause violence.
The NCIC's advocacy aims to bring women and youth on board, educating them on their roles and how to avoid inter-communal conflicts in the future.
