On Monday night, South Sudan's President Salva Kiir reconstituted parliament, marking a significant step towards the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Legislative Assembly as outlined in the 2018 peace agreement, published on May 11, 2021.

Through a presidential decree broadcast on state-run television, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, Kiir appointed 550 lawmakers from all parties that signed the revitalized peace accord.

The appointment came a day after he dissolved the National Legislative Assembly and Council of States.

According to the peace deal, the Revitalized Transitional Legislative Assembly will comprise representatives from the peace parties, with the former Transitional government nominating 332 members, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement – In Opposition (SPLM-IO) having 128, and the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, 50. Other political parties will have 30 representatives, while former detainees will nominate 10 members.

The Council of States, which was also dissolved, is expected to be reconstituted and expanded from 50 to 100 members, as stipulated in the peace agreement.

The revitalized assembly now consists of 550 lawmakers, with the majority from Kiir's governing SPLM party, followed by the SPLM-IO.

Other members appointed were from the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, Former Political Detainees, National Agenda, and the Democratic Change Party.
