On July 25, a househelp named Sarah Asibo allegedly stole $3,000 from her employer's bedroom in Kibera.

According to the employer, Kashmiraben Kumar, Asibo used the stolen money to buy a television set for her boyfriend, Paul Ojonga.

Asibo and Ojonga were charged with theft before Kibera senior resident magistrate Barbara Ojoo.

Kumar testified that she employed Asibo early this year and that the theft occurred when she left for work early in the morning.

She claimed that Asibo had been instructed to come early and leave early, but instead, she stole the money and later denied it.

Asibo allegedly told her employer that her daughter was sick and she had taken her to the hospital, but the next day, she reported to work and admitted to stealing the cash.

She claimed that she had given the money to her boyfriend, who exchanged the dollars for Kenyan shillings.

Police officers recovered $200 from Ojonga's house in Kawangware and also found that Asibo had sent Sh35,000 to her mother to buy iron sheets and Sh115,000 to her father through M-Pesa.

Asibo's boyfriend, Ojonga, denied the allegations and claimed that he was tortured by police and forced to sign a false statement.

He told the court that he had three children and that police at Industrial Area had made it difficult for his family to visit him.

Magistrate Ojoo advised Ojonga to seek assistance from the prison management.

The case will be mentioned on October 27.
