On October 4, 2019, police arrested Kelvin Maina in Njiru, Nairobi, for assaulting his wife. However, their search of his house uncovered a small-scale marijuana farm.
The farm consisted of 15 marijuana plants, hidden in a milk crate and modified 20-liter jerricans in the compound.
According to the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Maina was charged with cultivating the plant.
He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Steve Jalang'o and was released on bond.
Neighbours had called the area chief and police to rescue Maina's wife, who sustained serious multiple injuries during the incident and remains admitted at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Kayole.
