On October 4, 2019, John Wambua, the husband of Mariam Kighenda, had to break the devastating news to their 9-year-old son, Elvin, that his mother and sister had perished in the Likoni Ferry tragedy.

Elvin had been constantly seeing images of his mother and sister on TV, and it wasn't until the end of the previous week that he realized they were missing.

According to John, Elvin was so traumatized by the news that he broke down into tears, forcing Kenya Red Cross workers to intervene and counsel him.

John revealed that it has been tough for the family since he broke the news, and Elvin has been crying ever since, despite going for counseling.
