On Saturday, October 5, 2019, Hellen Obiri made history by successfully defending her world 5,000 meters title at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, securing Kenya's fourth gold medal.
Obiri led from the start to finish, touching the finish line in 14:26.7, a Championship Record, as Kenyans in the stands of Khalifa International Stadium cheered her on.
Her compatriot Margaret Chelimo took silver, finishing second behind Obiri in 14:27.4, a personal best.
Kenya's impressive performance places the country in second position on the medal table with a total of nine medals, including four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.
Other notable Kenyan athletes who secured gold medals include Ruth Chepngetich, who won the women's marathon, and Beatrice Chepkoech, who won the women's 3,000 meters steeplechase final.
Defending champion Conseslus Kipruto also successfully defended his 3,000 meters steeplechase world title on Friday.
