Homework can be a source of stress for both parents and children. However, with a few simple strategies, it's possible to make homework a more manageable and less frustrating experience.

According to Fiona Goddard, Senior Education Consultant at Maths-Whizz, giving children ownership of their learning is key. This can be achieved by setting routines, establishing expectations, and rewarding effort and perseverance.

"Always remain positive, talk through any obstacles together, and remember to give yourself grace – you can't nail it all of the time," Goddard advises.

Establishing a homework routine is essential. This can be as simple as setting aside a specific time each day for homework, with regular breaks in between. The length of the homework session will depend on the child's age, with older children requiring longer sessions.

It's also essential to create a distraction-free workspace. This means removing screens, except for the one being used for homework, and having all necessary materials within easy reach.

Visual aids can also be helpful, particularly for younger children. These can include times tables grids, multiplication flowers, and sticky notes with key points.

It's also essential to avoid negative language and to reward progress. This can be achieved through a reward scheme, such as a sticker chart, that leads to a bigger reward after a certain number of days or weeks.

Finally, don't be afraid to seek help if needed. This can include hiring a tutor, either in-person or online, to provide additional support and guidance.

Remember, the struggle is real, and it's okay to feel frustrated. However, by staying calm and positive, and by working together with your child, it's possible to make homework a more manageable and less stressful experience.
