On October 4, 2019, Thai wildlife authorities were alerted to a group of elephants blocking a road near the Haew Narok waterfall.
Three days later, the body of a three-year-old elephant was found near the waterfall, with the remains of the other five elephants discovered in the area.
According to the BBC, Thai officials suggested that the elephants may have been trying to cross the waterfall.
Edwin Wiek, founder of the Elephant Conservation Centre in Thailand, said that the elephants may have struggled to survive due to their dependence on each other for food.
'It's like losing half your family, there's nothing you can do, that's the world we live in,' Wiek said.
Approximately 7,000 elephants from Asia are found in Thailand.
Haew Narok waterfall is not the first location where such an incident has occurred.
