On October 4, 2019, a devastating road accident occurred in Kisumu county, claiming the lives of 13 people and injuring 38 others.
The accident happened when a Kisumu-Nairobi bound bus collided with a trailer at Pala near Awasi at 11 pm.
Both drivers died in the crash, with the Eldoret express bus driver attempting to overtake a tractor at the time of the collision.
Two survivors from the Eldoret Express bus attributed the crash to over speeding, with one of them recounting the events leading up to the accident.
"When we got to Awasi, the road was clear, so the driver increased his speed. We did not go more than 10 minutes before the bus started to swerve violently for few seconds then it hit something. The next thing I knew was that everyone was down," said Dackton Otieno.
Another survivor, Caroline Kalekye Odhiambo, shared her harrowing experience of watching her child die in the accident.
"I was going to my sister’s ceremony in Machakos. When we got to Awasi. I was jolted brutally by the impact of the accident. When I came to, I found one of my child was lying unconscious under the weight of heavy metal," she said.
