On November 7, 2017, Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru tragically died in a road accident on the Nairobi-Kenol highway while heading to Nairobi in his Mercedes Benz.

According to Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor, the governor died from excessive bleeding due to the accident.

Dr. Oduor testified at the Nyeri Law Courts during a public inquest into the governor's death, stating that the late governor's body had several cuts and abrasions, which he described as pale.

Catherine Wahome, the governor's widow, has denied any involvement in his death, citing her faith and convictions.

She revealed that the late governor had filed for divorce in 2013, and they had lived separately since 2008, but the divorce had not been finalized at the time of his death.

Martha Waweru, the governor's family lawyer, had earlier suggested that Catherine Wahome might have had an ill motive for the governor's death due to their troubled marriage and the withdrawal of her official car.
